Selecting a domain name for your on-line business is one of the very first steps you must take when starting an online business. Oddly enough most businesses don't invest enough time into this very important step.
For every business that is about to get on-line I would strongly recommend registering two (2) domain names.
The first domain name should be short and easy to remember. If at all possible try to find an available domain name that can be easily associated with a memory hook when heard for the very first time. It is also very important that you get a .COM name extension simply because people expect to hear it.
As an example we recently registered a domain name for a furniture and accessories web site. It was - www.spoilyourhome.com. This domain name is good because it is:
> Made up of common words (easy to spell)
> .COM extension
> Memorable because of its comedic value
This domain name would be used for any of your:
> Print Media
> Radio Advertising
> Television Advertising
> Word-of-Mouth Marketing
> Phone Conversations
The second domain name should be key word rich and focused for your Search Engine Optimization efforts. It should include your BEST target key phrase for your industry.
For example with the furniture site we would register the domain name of - www.cheap-furniture-wholesale.com. Note how I separated the domain name 'words' with dashes. This was done for two reasons:
1. Makes it a lot easier to read the domain name when skimming search engine results. Since this domain name will only be used for the search engines why not make it easy to read and understand!
2. Makes it a lot easier to get an available domain name.
With the domain name - www.cheap-furniture-wholsale.com I have managed to target three of this client's main key phrases. They are:
1. cheap furniture
2. furniture wholesale
3. cheap furniture wholesale
Once you have found the two domain names that you will be working with for your business it is time to have them both added to your NEW web site's hosting account.
Keep in mind that when you are submitting your site to the search engines you will be ONLY submitting the keyword rich domain name.
